Here's the shrine I promissed back on this blog post! Let's go over the basics of this game. There are other three versions of it (Winter, Jungle and Garden). I played the Spring version. I couldn't find information about the differences between each version, but I assume the main one is the starting place of your in-game Pet Shop, as the pets seem to be the same between all versons. They were also released a year before the Spring version, in 2008.
Back when I was a kid, I never had any Littlest Petshop related toys or merchandise, MAYBE some kind of McDonald's Happy Meal toy of them, but that was it. It wasn't a problem for me, cause honestly, I found them very strange and kinda uncanny. Cute, of course, but something wasn't quite right. I still find them odd, but now I have come to appreciate that about these lovely creatures. Their small bodies. Their big, big heads. Their unnatural hair colors and personalities. I love them!
Playing this game for the first time was a blast. As I said before, it's kinda like Animal Crossing and Nintendogs, but instead of befrieding the animals, you take care of them... To an extent. They don't need to have regular exercise, to be feed, bathed, petted, taken for a walk or to a vet visit. It's more like an aquarium of very very little plastic barbie-like fish: You buy new toys and decorations for them, dress them in cute clothing and play with them in various mini games and give each of them an unique name. To get money you need to play the mini games and complete missions... And thats it! That's the game! It's a very simple experience.
Now, for the part that I'm really excited about writing, the pets! Yeah, yeah, YEAH! They are divided in five categories in-game, most of them being matched by what kind of eye molds they have: It was an official Hasbro thing to categorize LPS toys and the game devolpers from EA choose to implement in game. Althought, the in-game categories don't always match their real life counterparts and EA also included "Spring", which isn't an eye category, but a kind of toy set Hasbro released. I will be including both my nicknames for each pet and their official production name, and a picture of their toys cause I think that will be cool! Some of them might not be accurate, I had to do aproximattions for the pets under the Spring category, cause I didn't find their official release names. For these, I looked trought catalogues of LPS toys and tried to make an aproximation of what toy they might be, based on species/design/release date. I will be marking them with a * symbol. My main sources for information on the toys and pictures were this page on an LPS wikia and the LPS Merch Database.
